Tree TracingsGreene County Genealogical Society

Meeting notice – PLEASE NOTE change of location. The next meeting will be Saturday, March 7 at 10 am, but NOT in the Jefferson public library.  We will again be meeting at the courthouse – this time in the second  floor auditor’s office.

Pam Olerich will give us some hints on “Looking up Land Records”.  If your Greene County ancestor owned the SW ¼ of the SW ¼ of Sec. 22, T82N, R29W, could you locate it?  It’s amazing what you can find in land records. Olerich will help show us how and allow a little time to look up information you might need for your family history.  Do your homework before you come and bring pencil and paper.  You may use courthouse parking.  Please use the east door.  Guests and new members are always welcome.

Online land records/deeds:  At our meeting last month, Marcia Tasler shared with us that Iowa land records have been digitized and online starting in 1988.  If you would like to browse around, go to iowalandrecords.org.  The search is free, but you do have to log in.

Watch for it: There is a Greene County Living magazine that most of you get in your mail box free once a month.  The next issue will have an article about the Greene County Genealogical Society.  If you live out-of-county or out-of-state, you may access it online at www.iowalivingmagazines.com/greene-county

Orphan train: Be sure to tune in to IPTV, Ch. 11 on Sunday, March ,8 for a documentary about orphan trains.  Some of you may recall that Frances Cudahy’s mother came to Greene County via the orphan train.  If you live in the Rippey area, you may know that Al Kupfer’s father also came here on an orphan train.  Watch for further details on a program that the Greene County libraries are doing later this month.

Reference library: Just a reminder that our reference library is open only by appointment until April.  It may take that long to clean up all the plaster dust created by the construction work to install the new elevator at the Jefferson public library. Please call Arlene Johnson at 515-386-5431 to make an appointment.  Don’t be surprised if she asks to you to bring a dust cloth.  (Just kidding.)

Genealogists may not be on the move yet until nicer weather, but they have sure been emailing or phoning queries.  Some of the names being researched are Foster, Southhard, McNeil, Bebb and Nicholson – also Gen. William Sherman.
